DramAidE and its partners are presenting a host of health promotion-related activities during the FIFA 2010 World Cup South Africa™, which runs from 11 June to 11 July.
The aim is to create an environment in which people can access information about health-related services. During this period, DramAide and other civil society partners will embark on activities including:
- Training peer educators in Atlantis in the Western Cape, in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health, to undertake local communication campaigns
- Working with the KwaZulu Natal Youth Empowerment Project in Cato Manor in KwaZulu Natal to run soccer tournaments, as well as presenting community workshops and providing a big screen in the local community hall, where residents will be able to watch World Cup matches and video clips promoting healthy lifestyles
- Training community health volunteers in KwaZulu Natal in partnership with the Department of Health, to work in non-commercial viewing areas. In these areas, trained peer educators and volunteers will develop their action plans to be implemented during and after the World Cup
Activities will include screening of documentaries and debates, Scrutinize and Brothers for Life workshops, 11- and 5-a-side soccer tournaments, arts and culture activities, door-to-door campaigns, condom distribution, one-on-one training of volunteers and peer educators, and mass media activities.
These activities are included in a one-week programme that will be repeated over the four weeks of the tournament. Key themes are HIV prevention, health and wellness, children’s needs, celebrating life responsibly and positive masculinities. The target audiences will be youth, children, adults, men, and sportsmen and women.
